Male Body Concerns / Question
Published: August 6, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a male, and I have lumps in my breasts about the size of a quarter. I was wondering if this is normal? They can sometimes be sore.

Dear Male with Lumps in Breasts,

Sometimes lumps in the breasts and male breast growth is completely normal. and sometimes it is not.

You did not mention your age, but during puberty, some males experience "Gynecomastia", which means an enlargement of breast tissue, felt as a smooth, movable disk. It is temporary and will usually spontaneously go away on its own.

FX has answered other questions on male breast growth. Please check out FX's response to "I Think I Have Gynecomastia"  and "Male With Large Nipples".

Since you mentioned that your breasts are sometimes sore and because you described them as lumps, FX recommends that you get checked out by your doctor just to be sure that everything is fine. He/she can let you know if there is anything wrong and address any other concerns you are having. If you would like to meet with a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey at 973.971.6475.
