Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: August 12, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My girlfriend gave me head for an hour and I didn't ejaculate. I had masturbated the day before and was wondering if that could have something do to with why I didn't, or if it was something else.

Signed: No Ejaculation

Dear No Ejaculation,

The fact that you did not ejaculate after an hour of receiving oral sex is probably not due to your masturbating the day before. Any kind of frequent ejaculation, like masturbation or other sexual activity, often decreases the amount of semen produced during orgasm, but usually will not hinder your ability to climax.

Unless not ejaculating becomes a common occurrence, there is really little need to worry. It is difficult to determine exactly why people sometimes do not ejaculate. There are a lot of things, including prescription or non-prescription drugs, smoking, or stress, that can make climaxing more difficult. Sometimes, if you begin to focus too much on ejaculation you can put too much pressure on yourself and that may interfere with climaxing. In situations where you feel like you are taking a really long time to reach orgasm, it might be best to take a break and relax, and try again later on. Also, there is no standard time for how long it takes a man to ejaculate and each person's body is different. Ejaculation is only one part of the sexual relationship, and it is not necessary for you to ejaculate during every sexual encounter you have.

If you feel that you are having trouble ejaculating on a regular basis, you might want to go to your doctor or a teen health center to discuss your concerns. A teen health center can see you confidentially and on a low/no cost basis. If you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6457 for an appointment. While there why not talk to a medical professional to be sure that you and your girlfriend have been practicing safer sex.
