Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I have participated in activities "down there".  I haven't given him oral sex, but if my doctor asked me if I am sexually active? what should I say?

Dear Am I Sexually Active?,

TeenHealthFX thinks that you should be honest with your doctor when you discuss sexual activity.  This means letting him/her know what activities you have done.  It is very important for you to be honest with your doctor now and always.  It sounds like you may be anticipating your doctor asking you about sexual activity or maybe he/she already has.  If your doctor does ask, he/she may be interested in offering you advice and counseling on your sexual health.  Your doctor is a good person with whom you already have a relationship with and you can talk to about this kind of stuff.

By participating in these "activities" there is always the risk of becoming pregnant or contracting STD's (Pre-ejaculatory Fluids & Pregnancy or Pre-ejaculatory Fluids and STD's).  It is a good idea for you to think about going to a teen health center or local Planned Parenthood who can see you without your parent's permission, confidentially and on a reduced or no cost basis.  If you live in Northern New Jersey call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-5199.

It would also be best for you to learn more about the activities that you doing and the specific risks that are involved with them.  Your doctor can help you with this.  Make sure that they are right for both you and your partner, as sex is not always the right choice.
