Dear TeenHealthFX,

Can HIV be misdiagnosed as mono even if a mono spot test is done?

Dear Can HIV Be Misdiagnosed As Mono?,

No, HIV cannot be misdiagnosed as mono. Both HIV and mono are caused by viruses.  These viruses, however, are not related and each is diagnosed by a specific blood test. An HIV test is specific for HIV and a mono spot test is used to detect EBV (Epstein-Barr virus) or mono.

TeenHealthFX recommends that you talk with your doctor if you are concerned about your HIV status. Your doctor can discuss testing and treatment (if necessary). For more information about HIV/AIDS, you can check out our answer to HIV/AIDS or Project Inform.
