Male Body Concerns / Question
Published: June 16, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is it normal to bleed from your penis when not having intercourse? I was with my boyfriend and we were rubbing up on each other, but he took his penis out and we were just rubbing. I had my sweats on, and when we stopped, I felt something on my pants and it was wet. When I looked, it was blood. It was all over the floor, so I fingered myself just to check to see if maybe I was PMSing or something, but I was ok. I asked him if he cummed and he said he didn't know but it was him. It was on his pants in the front. So please, I mean we are both virgins and around 16-17 I'm new to this and I don't know what went on. Please write me as soon as possible. Thank you!

Dear Normal To Bleed From Penis When Not Having Intercourse?,

FX can understand how something like this could make you have great anxiety. From what you described, and especially if this problem still persists, seeking medical advice is highly recommended.

Your boyfriend may have hematospermia, which is blood in the ejaculate (cum), but without a doctor's exam he cannot be diagnosed and FX cannot tell you for sure. FX realizes he was not sure if he ejaculated or not, but it could have happened, especially if he has never noticed any blood in his urine or had any urinary irritation or infections. Most men will have repeated episodes. The condition is usually "self-limited", which means it will go away in time without treatment. Other men will have one episode and no recurrence.

Although the cause of hematospermia is unknown, it is thought to be a result of inflammation/infection of one of the many small organs where your semen comes from. There can be other less common causes of blood in your semen that a male should not disregard, such as cancer or prolonged rough sex. So all this said, your boyfriend should get checked out. He can go to a teen health center or to his regular doctor.
