Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: February 18, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

About a year ago, I was playing basketball and I fell and landed on the head of my penis. When I looked at it there was a big black bruise on the head. It gradually faded to red. Now I have a red bump on the head of my penis. I was wondering if it will ever go away or if there is something I can do to get rid of it?

Dear Bruised Penis,

It sounds as if your injury is still in the process of healing. The penis is a very sensitive organ as are all of the human genitalia and will often heal much slower than a bruise on your face. The bump is probably left over scar tissue that may eventually disappear.

However, the fact that your penis took a blow hard enough to bruise it is a bit concerning. It would not hurt to see your doctor and ask him if there was any permanent damage. It is important not to ignore this and take care of it as early on in development as possible when things can be done to help repair any damage if there is any even at all.

In order to prevent this type of accident from happening again, you may want to invest in an athletic cup. Males during puberty and older should be extra careful of protecting their genitals. Wear the cup when you are playing any kind of contact sports for both protection and support.
