Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: September 26, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I was not circumcised when I was a kid and I see other guys penises and they look different than mine. The head on their penis is exposed and mine is under skin. Is this normal? Will it ever be exposed?

Dear Uncircumsized - Will Head Of Penis Ever Be Exposed,

The head of your penis is underneath what is called foreskin - this is totally normal for uncircumcised males.

The foreskin is like a tube of skin that surrounds and originates at the base of the head of the penis. This tube of skin has special properties that allow it to slide easily on the penis shaft rather then being firmly connected like most skin is. The foreskins length and the fact that it is unattached allow it to slide up and down the shaft and roll in on itself over the head of the penis.

When an erection occurs the foreskin can roll back to allow the penis to lengthen while permitting the skin on the shaft to stay loose. The foreskin is frequently long enough to cover the head of the penis while erect. Sometimes it is not and so when you have an erection, you may notice that the head of your penis will be exposed. Either way, the foreskin will in no way hinder your sexual performance in any way.

Lastly, remember that penises come in all shapes and sizes. In a healthy sexual relationship it is more important that you and your partner share a mutual respect, affection and understanding and good, open communication - foreskin or no foreskin.
