Sex Definitions / Question
Published: October 24, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Me and my boyfriend (online) have cyberish phonish sex, I use a pool stick and he masturbates and we imagine its each other, and we talk on the mic while we do it, and he tells me in and out, is this a form of real sex? Am I still a virgin or not? I did pop my cherry when I first did it, also is this in anyway dangerous to my health?

Dear Am I A Virgin After Online Sex?,

What you are doing is not a form of real sex as defined by sexual intercourse. It is a form of mutual masturbation. To answer your question, you are still a virgin. Masturbation is not dangerous to your health, however you must be careful. Masturbation is a personal choice and a personal preference. When using an object like a pool stick, it is definitely best to cover it with a lubricated condom. With anything, make sure what you use is clean to prevent infection. Check out Could Masturbation Cause Health Problems for more information.

Although you are not having physical intercourse it is still important to be very careful when being sexually explicit with someone online. The online world offers lots of ambiguity and it is important that you are very careful and know exactly who you are talking to. If this relationship is solely based on these sexual encounters you may want to slow things down. TeenHealthFX does not know the specifics of your relationship. If you have only met this boy online you must be very careful. Older men often try to gain the trust of young girls by lying about their age. Never meet someone online in person or give out personal information!

Also online chatting and activity can often mask emotions and allow us to say and experience things we would not otherwise with little risk of embarrassment. It is much easier to misinterpret emotions and hurt another's feelings. Check out Sex on the Net for more information.

Please remember to always be careful and practice safer sex in any setting.
