Dear TeenHealthFX,

After taking out a nipple piercing and letting it close over is it still possible to breastfeed?

Dear Can I Breastfeed After A Nipple Piercing?,

This is a very good question.  Although FX hopes that you are not considering pregnancy now, but later on in life.

So here’s the answer…

Yes, females that have had a nipple piercing can breastfeed after the hole is well healed.  In fact, Piercing.org recommends that the piercing be taken out before conception occurs because a woman's body undergoes many changes during pregnancy and it should given enough time to heal completely.

For this information and more on piercing and breastfeeding, FX consulted the La Leche League and found the following article, we recommend that you read it too: Nipple Piercing: Is It Compatible with Breastfeeding? LEAVEN, June-July 1999, pp. 64-65.  Piercing.org has some good information on this too.
