Females: Your Period / Question
Published: October 29, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am almost 14 years old and I still haven't started my period. My mom and my sisters all started by the time they were my age. Is this a problem? What can I do?

Signed: 14 And Still No Period

Dear 14 And Still No Period,

TeenHealthFX hears that you are concerned and wants you to try to relax. Although menstrual cycles in mothers and daughters do tend to be similar to one another, that does not mean that they necessarily have to be. In fact, the average age when a girl gets her period is usually about 12.5 to 18 years old (usually about 2 years after breast development). Since you are 14 and fall well within the normal range, you more than likely have nothing at all to worry about.

For other questions similar to yours and for more information on your menstrual cycle (period), do a search of FX using keyword "period" and see When Will I Get My Period and Am I Starting My Period
