Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: October 29, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Shortly after I ejaculate, when I get an erection, it hurts and I can't ejaculate again. After a few hours I can again. Is this normal? What is the normal waiting time after ejaculation that I can ejaculate again?

Dear How Long Before I Can Ejaculate Again,
Most men tend not to be able to get aroused readily during the period that follows orgasm. This time between orgasm and the ability to achieve another erection and orgasm is called the "refractory period". This refers to the feeling of calm you have after just having exerted a fair amount of energy and released muscle tension. Following orgasm, the flood of endorphins in your brain makes you even more relaxed.
Young men typically have shorter refractory periods than older men, but the actual time frame differs from person to person. Having to wait a few hours though is not unreasonable or particularly out of the ordinary. Some men do also feel some slight discomfort in their genitals immediately following ejaculation, but if you are experiencing pain then it sounds like you need to make an appointment with a doctor to have it checked out.
If you do not have a family doctor that you feel comfortable with and you live in Northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health in Morristown, New Jersey, at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
