Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: August 30, 2005

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I've heard that penile cancer is pretty rare, but what are some obvious signs of it?

Dear Penile Cancer's,

You are right, penile cancer (cancer of the penis) is pretty rare in the United States and Europe. The American Cancer Society estimates that penile cancer occurs in about 1 man in 100,000 in the United States.  Accounting for about 0.2% of cancers in men and 0.1% of cancer deaths in men in the United States. Penile cancer is much more common in some parts of Africa and South America, where it accounts for up to 10% of cancers in men. There tends to be an increased incidence in uncircumcised males.

Here are some basic symptoms.

·       Penis pain

·       Lesions on the penis – this would look like a sore or bump on the penis – may be painful or painless

·       Painless sore on penis

·       Bleeding from the penis

All of these symptoms can be signs of other kind of infections or problems.  So if you have one or more of these, go to your doctor or teen health center.  A doctor can examine you and offer treatment if it is necessary.  In addition, a doctor can answer any questions you may have and alleviate any worries.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood
