Male Body Concerns / Question
Published: May 14, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is it normal for a 15 year old who has hit puberty late to lactate? My father had the glands under his nipples removed.

Signed: Male Lactation

Dear Male Lactation,

No, it is NOT normal for a male to lactate (or have a discharge from his nipples) at any age.  If you are experiencing any fluid coming out from your nipples, TeenHealthFX strongly recommends that you see a doctor for an evaluation.

You did not say why your father had the glands under his nipples removed.  Asking him why would be the fastest and easiest way to understand the reason.  One condition that is very common among teenage boys is called gynecomastia.  We have answered several questions on the subject - check out our Male Body Concerns category to see what other teen boys concerns are about the subject.  Gynecomastia usually resolves on its own during puberty.  If in time it does not go away, it can be surgically corrected.

Again, TeenHealthFX recommends that you see a doctor if you are experiencing any type of fluid (discharge) from your nipples.
