Sexually Transmitted Diseases / Question
Published: November 25, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hey I am looking for some information. The other week I had unprotected oral sex performed on me from another girl. Two days later a trio of small bumps showed up on my back in a cauliflower patter and was quite itchy. There were two sets of these raised spots on my lower back about underwear line and then a flesh colored cauliflower shaped trio on my outer arm near my wrist. I as well developed some smaller ones on my legs that were red and raised not all were cauliflower shaped. They went away in a little over a week. And now for the past month or two I have had an irritable rectum, seem when I wipe down there or sweat, it seems as tough I am chaffed and is itchy. I examined the area but there is nothing there. Can anyone help? Is it possible to have these wart-like itchy things on my skin and develop rectal warts?

Dear Rectal Warts,
Unfortunately, TeenHealthFX cannot diagnose you over the Internet and without seeing the rash you're describing. Even though your rash and irritated rectum are sensitive topics, you need to make an appointment to see a doctor and have yourself checked out - he or she will be able to do a thorough examination and determine the best way to treat you.
While it's unlikely that the rash you had on your back, arms and legs came from having unprotected oral sex performed on you, some sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) can be transferred from one person to another by the hands, if one of them touched their genitals and then some part of his or her partner's body. The biggest risk to having unprotected oral sex is that many STDs can be transmitted by oral-genital contact, and in the future you really should protect yourself - you can check out Oral Sex Sores? for more information.
As far as your anal irritation and itchiness goes, there are a number of things that could cause such symptoms. If no one other than you has come into contact with your anal area, then it's very unlikely that you have an STD there. Some other things that might cause anal itching include washing too much or not enough, being exposed to chemicals, like those found in bubble baths or perfumed soaps, fungal infections, pinworms or even eating certain foods, which can cause irritation when you defecate. The anus is usually sweaty and airless, and is very prone to becoming irritated. Even though anal itchiness is usually not a big medical problem, it is definitely annoying and oftentimes caused by something entirely treatable. So it's a good idea for you to get checked out by a doctor. If you live in Northern New Jersey call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. Otherwise, you should call your family physician. Good luck!
