Dear We're 14 & Don't Love Each Other, Should We Have Sex Anyway?,

TeenHealthFX is glad that you wrote. We're very concerned about you physically and emotionally. Please realize that fourteen is too young to be having sex for a few reasons like your body not being fully developed and also your emotions are not fully developed (even though it is legal for a same age partners to have sex, like two 14 year olds).

Although TeenHealthFX doesn't think it's a good idea, it is ultimately your decision.

Since a sexual relationship has consequences, read What Will Sex Be Like the First Time for some very important things to think about before you have sex with anyone. FX would like you to talk to a trusted adult, like a parent, an aunt or a school nurse or counselor about what your thoughts, feelings and values are when it comes to sex and relationships.

If you do decide to have sex, you do need to take precautions. Talk to your doctor about birth control and preventing sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). See our information about practicing safer sex. If you're not comfortable talking to your own doctor and you live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475. Outside of this area, you can contact your local Planned Parenthood or teen health center. These services all provide confidential care at low or no cost.
