Visiting The Doctor / Question
Published: November 26, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hey- I am a 15 year old girl. I started having my period when I was 10 years old. One year ago I became anorexic. My periods began to become irregular (they never were before) and sometimes, I would skip them. Now, after 5 months of eating healthy and gaining weight back, my periods still have not normalized. To tell the truth, I haven't even had one in about 4 months or longer. In December I am going to the gynecologist for the FIRST TIME to see what's wrong. I am really nervous and scared about going. What will she do?? How will she do it?? How long will it take? What is going to happen???? PLEASE give me ALL the information that you can on this subject!!!! Thanks!!!!

Dear First Gyno Visit,

TeenHealthFX is happy to hear that you are concentrating on eating healthy and getting well. We know that it is not easy - good for you!

As you probably know, missed periods, often called Amenorrhea, can be a common side effect for anorexics and recovering anorexics. It can take some time for you body to re-regulate itself and return to its normal functioning after such a dramatic and prolonged weight loss. Nonetheless, TeenHealthFX is glad that you are taking responsibility for your own health and going to see a doctor and have it checked out for sure.

Just like doing anything you have not yet experienced, going to the gynecologist for the first time can be scary in some ways for just about everyone. But, rest assured there is nothing at all to be frightened of. Most doctors are sensitive to their patient's medical and emotional needs and will do their best to make the patient feel comfortable. Your doctor will examine you, answer any questions you may have and will discuss any medications you may need along with how to get the results of the exam and when to make your next appointment.

For detailed information on this topic, and particularly what she can expect from the doctor at her first visit have a look at our answer to Sexually Active and Wondering About a GYN.
