Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: November 26, 2002
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I've been on the pill for 11 months now and have only missed it once or twice in that time- my b/f and I usually use condoms but sometimes they break. I'm scared that I might be pregnant. There's really no signs yet but last month my period came the day after it was supposed to - and it was dark. if I take a pregnancy test at home will the pill affect the outcome? Is it possible to be pregnant and not know?? Please help! Thanks!

Dear Pregnant And On The Pill,
TeenHealthFX is glad to hear you are taking responsibility for your sexual health by practicing multiple methods of birth control. Unfortunately, your condom broke, but please always use condoms along with the pill. This offers you STD protection and double protection against pregnancy.
It is certainly possible to be in the early stages of pregnancy and not know yet, but because you are on the pill, used a condom and have gotten your period since you last had sex, it sounds unlikely that you may be pregnant. You should know though that it is possible to be pregnant and to continue having your period (when not on the pill) even while on the pill.
From what you say it sounds like you are diligent about making sure you take your pill as directed. If you are taking your pill each day, at the same time of day and have not missed any pills, then the chances of you being pregnant are very unlikely. If you are taking the pill incorrectly or have missed pills and not used a back up method of protection then your chances of becoming pregnant are certainly greater. Have a look at TeenHealthFX's response to Forgot My Pill! Pregnant? for more information on this subject. If you feel you may be pregnant or are exhibiting any symptoms of pregnancy then you need to see a doctor or go to a teen health center as soon as possible.
As far as your question, "Will being on the pill affect the outcome of a pregnancy test?" Regardless of whether or not you are on the pill, a pregnancy test looks for a specific pregnancy hormone in the urine. If it finds that hormone, the test reports a positive result.
For peace of mind, please go to your doctor or a teen health center. A teen health center can see you on a low/no cost basis and without your parent's permission. If you live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
