Females: Your Period / Question
Published: January 4, 2005

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 15 and I have a question about my period. I have had my period for a little more than a year now. On June 15th, 2004 I got it like I usually did, and then again on September 20th, 2004. That's a 4-month time range to get it. Now since then I still haven't gotten it and it is December 20th, 2004. Should I be worried? Or is it just not permanent?

Dear Haven't Had Period In 4 Months - Normal?,

TeenHealthFX recommends that a doctor or gynecologist evaluate you to make sure everything is okay.  There are several factors that can come into play when discussing regular and irregular menstrual cycles and a doctor can review your medical history and conduct a medical evaluation to see if this is normal or not.

Irregular periods are expected for the first year following the onset of menstruation (known as your first period). Periods that continue to be irregular usually do not affect your general health, but it is definitely a good idea to discuss it with your doctor.  Variations in your cycle may result from stress, travel, or intense exercise. Also, irregular periods may result from a significant weight change.   Regardless of the cause of your irregular periods, FX recommends speaking with your doctor about it.

You did not tell TeenHealthFX if you are sexually active. If you are and are experiencing missed periods there is a chance that you could be pregnant. In this case, you definitely want to see a doctor as soon as possible.

So again, make an appointment with a doctor.  If you do not have a doctor or gynecologist and live in the Northern New Jersey area you can contact the Adolescent Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.5199 or go to your local Planned Parenthood.  If you are concerned that you could be pregnant, call ASAP.  A teen health clinic can see you without your parent's permission and on a low/no cost basis.
