Male Body Concerns / Question
Published: October 13, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi. I used to go to the gym but 1 day when I was lifting heavy weight the pressure went in my testicles. It pained for 3 or 4 days. Then it stopped and now it doesn't pain any more but now my left testicle hangs lower than the right one. What should I do? I am embarrassed to go to the doctor. Is there a need for surgery or something like that or can antibiotics do it?

Dear Lifting Heavy Weight , Now Left Testicle Hangs Lower,

TeenHealthFX understands that you are concerned. It is normal for the left testicle to hang lower than the right. It may be that it was already in this position before you started heavy lifting but you noticed it after feeling the pain in your testicles. Check out our answer to One Testicle Is Bigger for more information about testicles and also for information on testicular health.

It may also be possible for you to have a hernia.  A hernia can often result from lifting heavy things.

You should see your physician to get checked out before you start lifting again.  Your doctor is trained to deal with this type of problem, and any doctor you see will have seen this kind of problem before. If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic.
