Dear TeenHealthFX,

I think I am a lesbian as I never find boys attractive. But every time a good looking girl walks past I have to look twice. I have never had any experience with girls but I haven't had much with boys either (and when I did I didn't enjoy it) but I keep going thought these phases were I am totally obsessed with a girl and they're all I ever think about. I also think about girls in a sexual way but I don't with boys. I am 16 and have felt this way for a few years now but I have never told anyone.

TeenHealthFX wants you to know that while you are in your teenage years it is normal to be confused about your sexuality. This can be a tough process, as you have probably already figured out, but sending in this question was a good start to helping you understand your feelings.

We recommend you speak with a family member or another adult who you trust. It has probably been difficult to keep this inside for so long, and it might lighten some of the burden to talk with someone. If you do not feel like you can talk to your parents about this, you can try calling Youth Enrichment Services at the Gender Identity Project (212-620-7310). This organization is based in New York City, but they can offer you counseling no matter where you live, and even give you information about organizations serving gay and lesbian youth in your area.

If you know of such an organization at your school or in your community, and you feel comfortable doing so, you might try joining. Other websites that can help figure out what is going on with you are: GALY-NJ, gurl.com, and Advocates for Youth for more information.
