Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: March 11, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a big MtV fan and a big Tom Green fan as well. When 'The Tom Green Show' was on the air on MtV, I remember one of his shows when he was talking about his testicular cancer. His camera crew followed him to the hospital and everywhere else he want. Viewers got to hear and see everything. He now has one testicle because he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. On this same show he mentions that he heard masturbation can decrease your risk of getting a disease such as testicular cancer. Is this true? I'm just curious. I masturbate a lot. This could be helping me and many other guys at the same time that it's pleasuring us. Thanks for your time.

Dear Curious About Testicular Cancer,

Tom Green did you and other young men a great service by making public his battle with testicular cancer. It is the most common form of cancer in men aged 15-35, and no one knows the exact cause.

Masturbation is a normal, healthy activity that causes no medical concerns, as long as it is not interfering with your life, and it is done privately. Presently, however, there has been no link established between masturbation and a decreased risk for testicular cancer. If you are concerned with reducing your own risks, a testicular self-exam is the best means of prevention, since this disease can be cured if detected early.

So, while you can continue to pleasure yourself, adding a self-exam to your routine is a great way to stay healthy.
