Male Puberty Issues / Question
Published: August 13, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Hi, I am a 14-year-old male. Most of the kids at school have deep voices. I don't! My voice started to crack in the beginning of grade 8. I am beginning grade 10 and it is still squeaky. What is happening to me?

Dear Voice Still Squeaking,

A high-pitched voice or a voice that cracks is a classic sign of puberty for males. As you continue to grow your voice will deepen and the cracking will stop. By the end of puberty your voice will stay at a lower range.

You probably are self conscious about your voice because it seems that you are the only one who is prone to higher pitches. Some of your friends have lower voices because they entered puberty earlier and will finish their growth at an earlier age. Other boys enter puberty later will continue to grow until a later age. Neither early nor late puberty has any influence on what your eventual growth will be. This is solely determined by your genetic makeup, which was passed onto you by your parents.

Try not to worry to much about this. Soon your voice will even out. It's likely that most people are not even aware of your changing voice. Hang in there!
