Female Puberty Issues / Question
Published: February 12, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 21 and have never been to a gynocologist. I'm scared to death to go. I know most people are afraid or embarrassed but they still seem to do it. I am in counseling but haven't talked to my therapist about this because it makes me feel sick and ashamed to talk about things like this. I am not sexually active so does it matter that I do not go? However, even if it does matter, I still can't go. Just the thought of this type of stuff makes me get such an unbelievably bad feeling inside that I don't even want to go on. Please give me some advice if you can.

Dear 21 & Never Been To A Gynecologist,

Going to the first gynecological exam makes a lot of women apprehensive. Just like anything new and potentially uncomfortable, it is normal to feel scared. Your fears may be strong, but are certainly normal.

It sounds as if you have a good relationship with your therapist and it would be a good idea to speak with her very soon about your fears about going to the gynecologist. Sometimes just discussing them with someone can help put things in perspective. Your therapist may be able to work with you to overcome your fears and help you get through this.

While discussing this with your therapist, FX recommends that you schedule a visit with a gynecologist. Maybe on the first visit, you can talk to the gynecologist about what he/she will do and also discuss your fears. Even if you are scheduled for an exam on your first visit, gynecologists will take the time to answer any questions and explain the exam first. Most gynecologists are aware that a female's first visit is often the hardest.

Because you are 21, even if you are not sexually active you should have a gynecological evaluation. If you live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.  You can also call your local teen health service or your local Planned Parenthood.

Good Luck.
