Visiting The Doctor / Question
Published: February 5, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am a sixteen year old female who is sexually active. I practice VERY safe sex with only one partner whom I have been with for a year now. The thing is, I haven't gotten a PAP smear yet, and I am too scared to go. I know that all females should get one yearly as soon as they become sexually active or turn 18, but I can't get myself to go. I've heard horror stories and don't know what is fact and what is fiction. I've heard that you have to take off everything below the waist, lay back on a bed and put your feet up into stirrups while someone sticks a large "Q-tip" inside of you. Please, I need to know exactly what happens, no one will tell me.

Dear The Real Deal On Pap's,

FX is glad to hear that you are practicing safer sex and only have one partner. You are right though; you still need to have a Pap test and a gynecological exam. As you said, it is hard to distinguish between fact and fiction when it comes to this stuff. FX has answered other questions like yours, please check out Sexually Active & Wondering About A Gyn; this question details what will happen during a gyn. exam.

After you read over the above linked question, make an appointment with your doctor. If you cannot go to your own doctor, a teen health center can see you without your parent's consent and on a low/no cost basis. In Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
