Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: January 9, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Me and my boyfriend had unprotected sex and he had an orgasm, but wasn't inside of me - he "pulled out". The next morning when I woke up, I got my period, whatever it was, but then it was gone the same day and has not returned yet. It has been a week - could I be pregnant?

Dear Unprotected Sex, Pregnant?,

Having unprotected sex is always risky, regardless of whether or not your partner "pulls out". It is important that you understand that the "pulling out method" does not protect against pregnancy or STD's. Many males have what's called pre-ejaculatory fluids (pre-cum). This does contain sperm, which can lead to pregnancy. Along these lines, many males do not even feel the pre-ejaculatory fluids come out. This makes this an even riskier situation because your partner may not feel anything come out, so may not pull out in time.

The only way to know for sure if you are pregnant is to see a doctor or go to a teen health clinic to have a pregnancy test done. A teen health clinic can see you without your parent's permission, confidentially and on a low/no cost basis. They often provide free condoms, and can help to educate you in making the best possible decisions regarding safer sex activities, birth control and STD protection. If you live in Northern New Jersey you can contact the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 889.6350. If you live outside of Northern New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.

Be Safe!
