Vaginal Discharge, Infections, & Odors and Douching / Question
Published: January 15, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I feel really uncomfortable going to my doctor because I know him personally, and don't feel comfortable talking to my mom either. I think I have a yeast infection from what I have read and was wondering what over the counter medication is. If it isn't a yeast infection, will taking the medication harm me?

Dear Over The Counter Meds For Yeast Infections,
TeenHealthFX understands that it can be uncomfortable talking with a parent and even sometimes a doctor about delicate issues like this, but would like to reassure you that going to see a doctor does not have to be a frightening experience. Most doctors are sensitive to their patient's medical and emotional needs and will do their best to make the patient feel comfortable. If you have a personal relationship with your doctor that is making it difficult for you to see him, then there is nothing at all wrong choosing another one. There are many, many good doctors out there who can help you and your current one will no doubt understand and respect your decision.
Yeast infections are very treatable, and yes, there are over the counter medications, but for teenagers we recommend seeing a doctor. As a teenager your body is changing, a doctor can examine you and make sure everything is okay. Also, the doctor can answer any of your questions and prescribe the right kind of medication for you.
Remember -- it is important to your physical health to get any infection treated. Most doctors are very used to dealing with these issues in teenagers. Since you feel you cannot go to your doctor or talk to your mother about this, you can always go a teen health center. A teen health center can see you for sexuality transmitted disease prevention and treatment and/or birth control issues without your parent's consent and on a low/no cost basis. In Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
