Male Puberty Issues / Question
Published: January 15, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Well this is really nasty but like first of all I need some tips on how to stop masturbation, I'm fighting it off, but its getting harder and harder as days go on, I feel like doing this in the shower. I think I can almost solve this problem on my own but the main problem is that today in the bathroom when I was taking a shower this really weird like seeds or something and brown fluidish stuff came out of my penis. I'm really scared. Is something wrong with me? I've never done anything bad before I just don't understand what's happening. It's like these yellowish seeds or something and brown stuff came out of my penis. Do you think you could help me?

Dear Brown Stuff Came Out Of My Penis,

TeenHealthFX understands that this may be a difficult subject for you to talk about.

You mentioned that you wish to stop masturbating. First, FX wants to assure you that masturbation is a normal and healthy release of tension. Also, it allows you to explore your own body. It is a natural occurrence and many people masturbate (although most will not admit it). It is important to examine the reasons why you wish to stop masturbating. Stifling any urges you have may frustrate you and disrupt your daily activities.

Masturbation can be performed everyday of the week or one day a month; it is purely a personal preference. As long as you masturbate in private, it does not cause you any type of discomfort or pain and it does not get in the way of normal relationships, there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.

All this said:
If you feel that your masturbation has turned into an addiction (an addiction is something that must be done everyday regardless of other life circumstances, something that you think about several times a day at least and is beginning to interfere with you everyday activities), then you may want to talk to a therapist or to your doctor. They will be able to determine if you have an addiction or not and how to help you.

As far as the seediness and brownish fluid goes - TeenHealthFX cannot make a diagnosis over the Internet and due to the nature of your problem strongly suggests that you see a doctor. TeenHealthFX understands that not knowing what is going on with your body can be a scary situation. This brownish fluid may be the result of many things. Only your doctor can perform specific tests and examinations to determine the cause of your problem.

Please make an appointment to see your doctor as soon as possible. If you live in northern New Jersey and would like help finding a doctor you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475.
