Females: Your Period / Question
Published: March 27, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have not gotten my period for past 20 months and before then I would get my periods every three or four months with heavy bleeding and strong cramps. I have enjoyed my period free time but I am worried that it is a result of something serious. I am 20 years old and not pregnant, please help shed some light on this issue?

Dear 20 Y.O. Without A Period For 20 Months - Serious?,

FX is concerned to hear that you have not gotten your period in almost two years. Losing your period can be a sign of a number of things:

We strongly recommend that you make a doctor's appointment as soon as possible to discuss all your concerns about your period (including the heavy bleeding and cramps you experienced before it stopped). If you do not have a doctor and you live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic or local Planned Parenthood.
