Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: February 23, 2004
Dear TeenHealthFX,
Hi. During intercourse the other night, I felt a pain and pulled out to find blood coming from my foreskin, as it had been torn and was bleeding underneath where it joins to the head (sorry I don't know the technical terms). It looks now to be bruised and I can see where it has been torn clearly. I wanted to know if this will heal by itself. I am embarrassed to see someone about this so have just tried to keep it clean and hope it would heal quickly.

Dear Foreskin Torn-Will It Heal By Itself?,
This is a really good question. Its very important for you to see a doctor right away, preferably a specialist called a urologist. While your foreskin may heal on its own, there is the possibility of infection that a doctor will be able to diagnose. Also, the foreskin may not heal correctly, causing scarring and potentially difficulty getting and maintaining an erection. To prevent this in the future, make sure you use condoms with lubrication to help decrease friction.
FX knows this kind of issue can be embarrassing to see a doctor about, but it is necessary. Keep in mind that although it may be embarrassing for you, many doctors, (especially urologists) have experience dealing with these kinds of issues.
If you do not have a doctor and you live in northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475. Outside of NJ, you can call your local hospital to get a name of an Adolescent Medicine doctor. Since this is sexually related, you can also be seen at a teen health center without your parent's permission and on a low/no cost basis. For a local center, call or check out Planned Parenthood.
