Published: February 25, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Is there a pill you can take if you are pregnent, that will get rid of the baby and stop the pregnancy? If so where can you get it and how much?

Dear Pregnant, Any Pill To End Pregnancy?,

Pregnancy is a major life-changing event that requires thought and preparation, but many pregnancies are unplanned, but fortunately, there are options for women who want to end a pregnancy. As far as non-surgical methods, Emergency Contraception or RU-486 are two options.

Emergency Contraception (EC or the morning after pill) is a choice during the first 72 hours following unprotected vaginal intercourse. Click on the link to Emergency Contraception to get more information.

RU-486 is another non-surgical option, although its availability may still be limited in some areas. RU-486, or mifepristone, is a medication that is administered to women who are pregnant (up until the 49th day following their last period), which blocks the action of progesterone, a hormone that is necessary to maintain pregnancy. After finding a healthcare provider who is specially trained to provide this medication, a woman who chooses RU-486 will usually have to make three separate trips to complete the course of treatment. Mifepristone is administered under a doctors close supervision because in rare cases, the medication does not work properly, and a surgical abortion is required. Side effects of the drug include bleeding, cramping, nausea, vomiting, short-term fatigue or weakness, and occasional diarrhea.

The decision whether to continue or end a pregnancy is a very serious one that can have life-long effects. While getting input from family, friends, and others is important, ultimately it is a decision that must be made by the woman. The best place to get information regarding options is a healthcare provider (such as your private physician, Planned Parenthood, or a Teen Health Center) who can provide information on all the options available in the community. Factors such as current health status, support, school, and family may influence alternatives to pregnancy.

The costs of procedures to end pregnancy vary. Price will be influenced by whether a person has insurance, sliding fee scales, and the availability of services.

To make an appointment with a healthcare provide in northern NJ, call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971-6475. Outside of the area, call your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood (800) 829-7732.
