Female Body Concerns / Question
Published: January 28, 2003
Dear TeenHealthFX,
For the past month or so, I have had extreme vaginal dryness, to the point of itching and even being painful. That's never happened to me before, and I am not sexually active, so it couldn't be an STD, could it? Is this normal, and if so, what can I do to be more comfortable?

Dear Extreme Vaginal Dryness,
It is impossible for TeenHealthFX to make a diagnosis over the Internet. Only a doctor or gynecologist could make a diagnosis and offer treatment options.
This said, there can be a few different explanations for vaginal dryness. Taking certain medications, such as some acne medications, decongestants and antihistamines can cause a reduction in bodily fluids. Also, stress can alter the way your body functions. Since you also mentioned vaginal itching and pain, it is possible you have some type of infection like a yeast infection. A yeast infection is a common health concern in teen-aged women. Some symptoms of an infection include painful urination, pain or itching in the genital region, frequent urge to pee and blood in urine.
If you have never been sexually active, chances are it is not an STD. There are also several dermatological (skin) conditions that can affect the vaginal mucosa (skin). If your doctor is not able to help you, you should see a gynecologist. So, call your doctor. Most infections are easily treated with medications and are not serious if treated in a timely manner. If you cannot go to your doctor about it, call a teen health center or Planned Parenthood in your area. If you live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Center for Health at 973.971.6475.
