Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: January 28, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have little ingrown hairs up the shaft of my penis. Is this normal? Is there a way to get rid of them?

Dear Ingrown Hairs On Shaft Of Penis,

There is not a lot of treatment for ingrown hairs. Ingrown hairs are actually a hair follicle that has become blocked by skin or dirt and has formed an abscess, or a type of infection/irritation. Eventually the body will repair this problem. If you feel that this is a recurring problem or if it is causing you pain, you should really consult your doctor.

A good way of preventing ingrown hairs is to basically keep the area clean and exfoliated. Be careful not to use products containing alcohol on your genital region because it could cause problems. There are several skin care products available to help prevent shaving bumps and also ingrown hairs, however many of them are not suitable for use on the genital regions so be careful if you decide to take this route.

Aside from being an ingrown hair there could be a possibility of a rash, or some other type of irritation or black head. It is hard to tell so it would be best to see a doctor. If you don't have your own doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment.
