Sexuality & Sexual Health: Miscellaneous / Question
Published: January 14, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I think I'm really messed up in the head. I'm 15 and I have fantasies about girls younger than me. Like 11-12. This probably isn't normal, how do I change? I don't want to grow up and be a pedophile.

Dear Fantasies About Younger Girls,

TeenHealthFX wants you to know that people are aroused by a limitless variety of things. We can respond sexually to all sorts of stimuli, and never fully understand why. This is even more the case during adolescence, when hormones are at high levels. It is important to know when it is and is not appropriate to act on sexual feelings. The mere fact that you have asked this question shows that you realize this. We also want to point out that while girls who are 11 or 12 are very young to be the subject of sexual fantasies, they are not that much younger than you.

There is a good chance that as you grow older, the subjects of your fantasies will, too. However, we think it is important for you to talk to someone who can help you sort out these feelings and understand them better. In northern NJ you can call the Access Center from Atlantic Behavioral Health at 888.2471400 for help in finding a therapist. Outside of this area, you can log onto the US Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's website to locate services in your area.
