Dear I think I'm Pregnant,

If you are having unprotected sex, you certainly could be pregnant. (For information on the symptoms associated with being pregnant, please read our answer to “How Do I Know If I Am Pregnant?” under the Pregnancy category of the Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website). However, it is also possible that you are not pregnant, as teenage girls often have irregular periods for the first few years of menstruation in terms of how often they get their periods and how heavy the flow is. But since it is possible you are pregnant, and because you are so worried about it, TeenHealthFX recommends that you meet with a healthcare professional as soon as possible so that he/she can determine whether or not you are pregnant and discuss your options in the event you are (raising the baby, having an abortion, or giving the baby up for adoption).

TeenHealthFX is also VERY confused about why you and your boyfriend are having unprotected sex. From your email, it sounds like the idea of your becoming pregnant as a teenager is understandably worrisome to you – so we are not clear why the two of you would take such a risk by not practicing safer sex methods. FX wants you to be clear that pulling out is NOT an effective method of pregnancy prevention as there is sperm present in pre-ejaculatory fluids (or “pre-cum”) that can impregnate a woman. And even if you two are exclusively together and in love with one another, there is nothing loving about unprotected sex and making yourselves vulnerable to various kinds of difficult situations between unwanted pregnancies and dealing with STIs. That said, FX thinks that it is VERY important for you to speak to a healthcare provider about the safer sex methods that are best for you to protect you and your boyfriend from transmitting STIs and from unwanted pregnancies. FX generally recommends using condoms each and every time during intercourse, as well as a back-up birth control method such as the pill or patch. For information on safer sex methods, please read our answer to “Updated Birth Control Information” under the Birth Control Methods category of the Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website.

In addition, since you asked about pregnancy tests, FX also advises that you read our answer to “How Long For Accurate Answer From Home Pregnancy Test” under the Pregnancy category of the Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website.
