Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: February 5, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend recently told me that he was circumcised as a baby due to an over tight foreskin. I assured him there was no problem with this but he still feels really embarrassed. How can I make him feel better? Also will this make sex uncomfortable for us?

Dear Boyfriend Embarrassed By Circumcision,

Your boyfriend may feel embarrassed until he is absolutely reassured that you are comfortable with the situation. He may feel that you will perceive and love him differently. Remember that although your boyfriend is circumcised this does not make him any different from uncircumcised guys. He is still capable of the same things with only a slight change in the appearance of his penis.

For those readers unfamiliar with circumcision, it is a surgical procedure where the foreskin, a flap of skin that covers the head of the penis, is removed. It is commonly performed on infants and can be performed for medical or religious reasons. Circumcised men have no inabilities due to the procedure and it will not make sex uncomfortable. You need to be supportive of your boyfriend and continue to assure him that it is ok. Let him know that you accept him for who he is without bias.

If you are thinking about becoming sexually active always remember to practice safer sex. Be open with your boyfriend and be supportive, soon after that he will not feel embarrassed!
