Dear Help With Pain During Menstrual Cycle,

Every woman deals with menstrual cramps differently and experiences them in varying degrees.

Typical menstrual cramps due to the contracting of the uterus can be treated with:

  • Heating pads or hot baths can help relax tense muscles
  • Herbal teas such as chamomile, mint, raspberry, and blackberry help sooth muscles and anxiety
  • Regular exercise can decrease the severity of cramps
  • Over the counter pain medication, such as Ibuprofen
  • Eating healthy and maintaining a balanced diet can help combat menstrual cramps. Limiting your intake of caffeine, sweets, salts and alcohol may help during this time of the month. Also moderate exercise will help loosen your muscles and alleviate stress.

Remember that cramps are a necessary part of your menstrual cycle. However, if your cramps cause you to miss school or other fun activities, last longer than your period, increase in intensity or are accompanied by heavy bleeding you should see your doctor. If you live in northern New Jersey and would like help finding a doctor you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475.
