Penis & Testicle Concerns / Question
Published: May 11, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I have a problem that I have one testicle in my scrotum. I feel the other one is somewhere in the deep valley just above the penis. Is it dangerous? Is operation the ultimate solution?

Signed: One Testicle

Dear One Testicle,

You're right to be concerned and you should go to a doctor for an evaluation ASAP. Your doctor will probably have you schedule an appointment with an urologist (a physician who specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of problems with the penis, scrotum and testicles).

It sounds like you may have an undescended testicle (the medical term is cryptorchidism). Although only a doctor can diagnose you, FX can say that surgery may be necessary if you have this condition for a few reasons: the higher temperature of the body may inhibit the normal production of sperm in the undescended testicle, the undescended testicle is more susceptible to forming a tumor, and the undescended testicle is more vulnerable to injury.

If you do not have a doctor and you live in Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475. If you live elsewhere, get in touch with your local adolescent health center or clinic.
