Breasts: They Come In All Shapes & Sizes / Question
Published: February 13, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 15 years old. I have abnormally large nipples for my body weight and size of 5'6" or 7"; and approx. 125lbs. My doctor told me it will go away-but when??? I am embarrassed to take off my shirt!

Signed: Large Nipples

Dear Large Nipples,

TeenHealthFX is glad to hear that you have consulted your doctor about this. It is a normal process for the nipples to grow and develop before the rest of the breast. Your breast will begin to develop shortly after you begin to menstruate. However, it is impossible to predict exactly when that will be because every individual begins puberty at different times and will develop at various rates. The size of your nipples will not go down, but instead your breasts will grow in correct proportion for you size. Unfortunately puberty is one of those life processes that seems to take forever and of course we have no control over making it all the more difficult. Be patient and your body will take care of the rest.
