Pregnancy: Could I Be Pregnant? / Question
Published: February 18, 2009

Dear TeenHealthFX,

My boyfriend and I were having sex when he pulled out and realized the condom was inside me. He did ejaculate into the condom but the one he used had spermicide. Is there a possibility of me getting pregnant?

Dear Condom Fell Off - Could I Be Pregnant?,

There is a possibility that you could be pregnant. TeenHealthFX suggests that you get in touch with your primary care physician, gynecologist, or an adolescence medicine specialist as soon as possible to see if he/she would recommend that you take the Plan B pill. Plan B is a type of emergency contraceptive (EC) that can prevent a pregnancy after contraceptive fails or after having unprotected sex. The Plan B pill works best when taken within 72 hours of being sexually active – so it is important to seek help as soon as possible if you think you might be a candidate for Plan B. Plan B will not work if you are already pregnant, and is not recommended as an ongoing method of birth control. But it can be helpful in situations like yours where the birth control method failed in some way.

After meeting with a doctor to discuss Plan B, FX recommends that you also discuss whether it would be helpful for you to be on the pill or patch in conjunction with using condoms as an additional way to help prevent against unwanted pregnancies.

If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or Girl’s Street – A Young Woman’s Health Program – at 908.522.2555. You can also contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood, or call your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.

To learn more about EC, please read the answer to “What Does The Emergency Contraceptive Pill Do?” under the Birth Control Methods category of Sexuality and Sexual Health section of the website.
