Females: Your Period / Question
Published: March 12, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 19 years old. I started my period when i was 14. It was fine at first, then at the 16 i got the shot. I recently stopped taking the shot (4 months) and my period has not stopped. or if it does stop whe I have sex it seems to come back on and heavier. Why is this happening and how can I stop it ?

Dear Stopped The Shot & Period Hasn't Stopped - Why?,

Depo-Provera  or "the shot" often alters your period while you are taking it or after you have stopped. You are right to be concerned if your period isn't stopping. TeenHealthFX recommends you see a doctor to find out what is going on with your menstrual cycle. In the northern New Jersey area, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.971.6475 for an appointment, or call your local Planned Parenthood.

TeenHealthFX hopes you are continuing to practice safer sex.  It is possible to get pregnant even when you have your period. If you have stopped taking the shot, you will need to use some other form of birth control. We recommend you use condoms because they protect against both pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.
