Female Body Concerns / Question
Published: May 6, 2009
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I've experienced pain in the vaginal area, like something sharp is poking into it. This occurred while I was walking and I had to sit down and cross my legs until they subsided. I'm only 15, not sexually active. They're not happening anymore but those pains scare me - I'm not going to welcome their return. I'm wondering what the cause might've been? Thanks for any heads up.

Dear Sharp Poking Pain In Vaginal Area,
The pain you experienced could be indicative of several things. It can be due to an STD, such as Chlamydia, gonorrhea, or genital herpes. However, since you stated that you are not sexually active, this would be unlikely. But the pain could be due to a vaginal yeast infection, a urinary tract infection, or due to a foreign object in the vagina, such as a forgotten tampon. It is impossible for TeenHealthFX to know exactly why this pain is occurring, but it is very important for you to meet with a medical health professional as soon as possible so that he/she can determine what is causing this pain and can provide whatever treatment is needed.
If you don't have a doctor and live in northern New Jersey, you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973-971-6475 for an appointment or contact your local teen health center or Planned Parenthood. You can also contact your insurance company for a list of in-network providers.
