Breasts: They Come In All Shapes & Sizes / Question
Published: February 23, 2004

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 15 and have very uneven breasts. Someone told me that taking birth control pills could even them out. Is this a possibility?

Dear Birth Control Pills for Uneven Breasts?,

Many teenage girls have concerns about the shape and size of their breasts. Check out our answer to Lopsided B & C Cups, Want Even Breasts. The end of puberty may be a few more years from now for you, so it is possible that your breasts will continue to grow and may even out by the time the end of puberty has been reached. Uneven breasts are very common for women of all ages, and there are many non-surgical and proven methods to assist women who are uncomfortable about the size difference.

Hormones affect breast development, and birth control pills contain hormones. While breast changes are sometimes a side effect of certain pills, they would never be prescribed for this purpose.  Birth control pills would not cause one breast to grow more than the other.

TeenHealthFX recommends that you talk with physician regarding oral contraceptives and breast development, or you could consult with a breast or plastic surgeon to learn more about surgical options available to you.  If you live in northern NJ and would like to meet with a physician from the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health, call (973) 971-6475.
