Female Body Concerns / Question
Published: June 4, 2003

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I've noticed that I have a bump in the upper part of my vaginal area. My mom told me that this is the clitoris. Could you tell me exactly where/what the clitoris is?

Dear What/Where Is Clitoris?,

The clitoris is a piece of tissue in the vagina between the top of the labia minora (inner vaginal lips) and the clitoral hood. It is a small piece of spongy tissue that is very sensitive when it is touched. This is due to the fact that there are many nerve endings there.

The clitoral hood, a covering of tissue similar to the labia minora, protects the clitoris. During sexual excitement, the clitoris may extend and the hood retracts to make the clitoris more accessible. A female's clitoris may be small while other women may have large clitoris that the hood does not completely cover. The Clitoris can be shaped differently and can range in color from pink to dark brown.
