Dear TeenHealthFX,

What is the procedure of getting tested for STDs?

Signed: STD Testing

Dear STD Testing,

Some STDs, such as HIV, syphilis, hepatitis, can be diagnosed through a blood test. Others, like gonorrhea and chlamydia, require a swab of the urethra or vagina (some places can test through a urine sample too). If you want to be tested for STDs, you can see your doctor, or go to an adolescent health clinic or your local Planned Parenthood.  In Northern New Jersey, please call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at (973) 971.6475.

If you get tested at a health clinic for STDs, including HIV, you may receive counseling before and after your test. Before the test, the counselor (who may or may not be the same person who gives you the test) will ask you some questions about your sexual history. Afterwards, if you are positive for an STD, he or she will talk to you about treatment, and if you are negative, you will discuss ways of ensuring that you remain negative.

Procedures can be different depending on where you get the test, so for more specific information you should call the place where you plan to get tested. Also please remember that you can avoid contracting an STD by practicing safer sex.
