Breasts & Nipples: Health Questions & Concerns / Question
Published: August 13, 2001
Dear TeenHealthFX,
I'm 15 years old and my breasts are not big. I am a 34A, but the problem is they always hurt. When I run or just going down the stairs I have to put my arms around them so they don't start hurting more then they do. What's wrong? Please send the answer to my e-mail address at XXXXXXXX.

Dear Breasts Hurt,
If you are having pain all the time or even some of the time, you should speak to your doctor about this. Also, if you are seeing any unusual swelling or changes in the nipples and areola, you should consult with your doctor. Your doctor will be able to tell you if there is something other than puberty causing your condition.
This said, it is quite common for breasts to become sensitive and hurt as they grow. The new tissue that develops is inclined to be very tender. As your breasts grow the skin stretches sometimes causing pain or itching.
Assuming that you are already wearing a bra, you may want to check that it is the proper fit for you. A properly fitting bra should cut down on pain and protect new breast growth.
If you would like to meet with a doctor and live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center For Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment.
You asked TeenHealthFX to email you back. Questions posted to the TeenHealthFX website are only posted on the website. TeenHealthFX is not able to send an answer to each person individually. This is mainly done for two reasons. One is that we guarantee visitors to the website will remain anonymous. This is especially important if the question asked is sensitive or potentially embarrassing. Second is that we view the web as a way for educating young people about a variety of topics that relate to their overall well being. Any one question may be relevant for countless others, and you benefit them by simply asking.
