Birth Control Methods: Birth Control Pills / Question
Published: August 15, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm on Ortho Tri-Cyclen and I have been taking consistently for 7 months now. I was wondering if it is possible to be pregnant and never stop getting your period.

Dear Ortho Tri-Cyclen, Pregnancy And Period,

Good for you that you are practicing birth control and that you have been taking the pill consistently!

To answer your question, now:

It is unlikely, but it is possible to be pregnant and to continue having your period (when not on the pill) even while on the pill.

If you are taking your pill each day, at the same time of day and have not missed any pills, then the chances of you being pregnant are very, very, very, highly unlikely. If you are taking the pill incorrectly or have missed pills and not used a back up method of protection then your chances of becoming pregnant are increased. For more information on this topic see TeenHealthFX's response to Forgot My Pill! Pregnant?.

TeenHealthFX is concerned about why you are asking this question. If you feel you may be pregnant or are exhibiting any symptoms of pregnancy then you need to see a doctor or go to a teen health center as soon as possible.

A teen health center can see you on a low/no cost basis and without your parent's permission. If you live in northern New Jersey you can call the Adolescent/Young Adult Center for Health at 973.889.6350 for an appointment. Outside of New Jersey, please call your local Planned Parenthood.
