Spot Reducing & Increasing / Question
Published: May 7, 2002

Dear TeenHealthFX,

Do those electronic Ab energizers actually work to make your muscles stronger? I know that proper diet and exercise is the way to go if building muscle but some of those electronic Ab stimulators make pretty lofty claims as to what they can do.

Signed: Electronic Abs!

Dear Electronic Abs!,

FX, as always, does not recommend any kind of quick fix product. This includes herbal remedies, ab energizers, etc. You are right - the best method to get in shape is to eat healthy and exercise!

Here is some more information:

Your right the claims are lofty, but are they accurate? The electronic "ab" energizer is one of the many fitness products marketed on infomercials. The major claim to this product (and those similar to it), is that they can provide a person with an abdominal workout anytime, any place. These products use electronic muscle stimulation technology and consist of patches that are placed on the abdomen. These patches provide an electric current that cause muscles to contract. The manufacturer contends that this product is not a substitute for exercise but a compliment to an exercise routine.

FX again agrees with you that proper diet and exercise are the best ways to go in achieving good physical fitness. If you are interested in starting a workout regime, talk to a coach or gym teacher on a good program for you. Same with a healthy eating plan, a school nurse, doctor or nutritionist can help you on your way.
