Healthy Ways Of Losing And Gaining Weight / Question
Published: December 10, 1999

Dear TeenHealthFX,

How can I lose weight?

Signed: Lose Weight

Dear Lose Weight,

Before you decide that you need to go on a diet and lose weight, you need to talk to a school nurse or doctor about this. They can provide you with information about a healthy weight range for someone your age and height. A doctor may recommend that you see a nutritionist who can help you plan a healthy approach to weight loss, which should include food choices and exercise. Dieting for teenagers can be tricky because your body is still growing and you need adequate calories to ensure this. Fasting and fads are approaches to weight loss that should be avoided.

Many teenagers believe that losing weight is the answer to becoming happy with yourself and your body. This is not true! If you are dissatisfied with your body or are unhappy about, you may need to speak with a counselor. Talk to your doctor about your concerns and get help if necessary.
