Body Weight - What's Normal? / Question
Published: February 24, 2000

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I am 14 years old and 5'9.  I weighed myself about 2 hours ago and I was 130 pounds.  When I saw I was much more underweight than I thought, I was frightened.  I hardly ever eat anymore and it is not because I have an eating disorder.  I just don't like to eat and I am very active.  I play volleyball, basketball and softball and have practice everyday.  I was just wondering what my average weight should be.

Dear Underweight,

It is good that you have recognized that you are underweight and may need to do something about it. TeenHealthFX is concerned about you and your dislike of eating.

We cannot give you an exact weight for your height and age because each person is different.  By calculating your Body Mass Index, TeenHealthFX received the number 19, which is considered a little low and can pose different health risks.  Also, you are still growing and your body requires certain nutrients to stay healthy and grow correctly.  TeenHealthFX is worried that you are not getting what you need from your diet.

Many teenagers have problems creating healthy eating habits.  Because you are having difficulty eating, you need to talk to your parents and doctor about it.  There are often other issues that surround eating that make people dislike it.  Your doctor may recommend that you go to a nutritionist to help you develop a healthy eating plan catered to your needs and desires.  The nutritionist will monitor your weight with you and help you to develop healthy eating habits.

See a doctor soon and try eating healthy in the meantime.
