Body Weight - What's Normal? / Question
Published: February 27, 2001

Dear TeenHealthFX,

I'm 16 years old. I'm 5'4" and weigh 102 lbs. I don't know if I'm underweight or overweight. I used to weigh 95 lbs. Should I keep gaining weight or am I healthy the way I am?

Dear Am I Underweight Or Overweight,

Only your doctor can accurately assess your weight right now. TeenHealthFX is glad to see that you have gradually been gaining though. 95 lbs. is a low weight and it is good that your body has begun to move towards a healthier weight. Please do not get confused about this weight gain though. It is most likely from your body beginning to grow and mature. As you get older, your body changes in all aspects, including weight, especially in women. Women need more mass in there body at your age to help carry out special functions like menstruation and maturation.

It is important that you concentrate on eating healthy and exercising. By developing and living a healthy lifestyle and eating habits, your body will adjust and become a weight that is good for you. The human body is an incredible thing. Your body is smart and will bring your weight to a point that is right for you, as long as you eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly. However if you are feeling tired, weak, or just not up to your fullest potential, you should speak with a doctor or nutritionist who can make sure that you are getting the proper nutrients to keep your body healthy and strong. They can also guide you on the right path to eating right and living healthy.
